PPS Trophies

Here we note some of the background to the trophies currently and historically awarded by PPS (also known as PSNS photographic section).
As well as some reminiscences, this includes lists of trophy winners, going back in some cases to 1954, as evidenced by the current incriptions on the trophies themselves.
For those interested in PPS history from before 1954, our parent body Perthshire Society of Natural Science has a 100-year timeline going back to the 1850’s, to the very dawning of the photographic era.

Main Cup

The Main Colour Trophy was donated by and is named after Alexander (Sandy) David Cockburn Main (1898 -1970), a Perthshire farmer. It was first introduced in 1957.

Its original purpose was to award the trophy to the winner of a multiple colour slide competition. Members could submit eight colour transparency slides each, which were then judged over four rounds, spread throughout the season. Each slide was marked out of 20 points creating a possible maximum score of 160 points. A league table of entrants was displayed after each round making it very competitive with members moving up or down the league. The focus of the competition was to challenge members to consistently deliver quality images which would score highly over the season. The trophy was awarded to the member with the top score over the four rounds at the end of the season. Winning this cup was seen as very prestigious, and highlighted the winner as a skilled photographer.

However, finding judges each season proved problematic. In the 1990s the competition format was reduced to six slides entered, spread over three separate meetings with a single judge, still a heavy workload for a single judge. A few years later another modification was required, moving with the times to switch from transparencies to digital files.

The competition format now requires three digital images to be entered, each marked out of twenty points, and judged on a single evening. The trophy is awarded to the photographer with the highest total score out of 60.

Simpson Cup

This trophy is named after Jack Simpson, a former member of the PSNS photo section who was skilled in audio-visual presentations. The original format required projecting transparency film using two projectors, while simultaneously using a tape recorder to play music, poetry or sounds relating to the images. Two transparency slides were overlapped and merged producing a flowing sequence; a third slide was often used to blend an image while the previous image fades away. The competition now reflects current practice and replaces transparencies with digital slides or movie clips with a supporting soundtrack.

Festival Trophy

Perth Festival of the Arts Trophy was presented by JRS Sidey, a former proprietor of the JRS photography shop in Scott Street, now (2024) occupied by the Perth Photo Lab. The trophy was awarded for the best print displayed during the annual PFA exhibition. The exhibition was put on every year in the Perth Theatre foyer, and offered an opportunity to show the members’ work to the general public. The invited judges came from all walks of life and were invited to show their own work and feature as a guest exhibitor. The winner was often pictured holding the trophy in the local Perthshire Advertiser newspaper (the PA), which created good publicity for the PPS activities. Since the refurbishment of the Perth Theatre left their foyer without such a suitable exhibition space, the trophy has been retired for a number of years. However, for 2024, the PFA exhibition took place in an empty retail unit in the St John’s Centre, allowing the awarding of this trophy once again.
